The search for innovative sustainable product developments and taking energy-saving measures are part of everyday ‘corporate social responsibility’ by Steenfabriek Engels.
Ceramics and sustainability go hand in hand. The lifespan of our product is one of the most important aspects in relation to the actual environmental impact. Throughout the centuries it has been proven that ceramic products have a very long life. This has both a relationship with the aesthetic and technical characteristics.
The Dutch brick industry is very conscious about resource extraction and the environment. Recently, research by research institute Deltares has shown that clay is a self-renewable and therefore sustainable raw material. After clay extraction, the extraction area will be returned to nature in the context of ‘space for the rivers’ and Staatsbosbeheer will realize so-called ‘wet’ nature development in which flora and fauna can develop unrestrained.
English Brick has conformed to the MJA-3 long-term agreement Energy Efficiency with the Ministry of Economic Affairs on reducing energy consumption and associated CO2 emissions.

For the reuse of rinsing water and waste sand, the extraction of dust and the purification of flue gases, we use installations that comply with the European BREF which describes the state of the art for the ceramic industry. As a result, Steenfabriek Engels can meet the strict requirements regarding dust in the workplace and the emission of flue gases.
Steenfabriek Engels, as a family business, pays a lot of attention to the welfare of the employees. Agreements made by the sector at European level on dust control systematically find practical application on the shop floor. Noise is reduced, machine safety guaranteed and the dangerous actions for humans are largely mechanized.
